Tips for Choosing a Contractor
  • You might consult the CT Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors at www.ct-phcc.org.
  • Look for a contractor who is willing to spend time with you to understand your needs.
  • Get at least three written estimates from different contractors.
  • Ask for proof of proper licensing and insurance, including workers compensation and liability.
  • Ask the contractors for references and their experience with the equipment or appliances they will be installing.
  • Check with your local Better Business Bureau about the company you plan to hire.
  • See if the company will obtain a local permit, if necessary, and be sure they understand local residential building codes.
  • For heating or cooling equipment, the contractor should calculate heat loss or heat gain to ensure the equipment is sized properly for the project.
  • Ask your contractor about the efficiency rating of equipment or appliances. Different ratings will impact your annual operating costs.
  • Ask about product warranties - what is covered and for how long?
  • Always sign a written contract.
