Make Energy Efficiency an Integral Element of Your New Home's Design

There is no better time to think of energy efficiency than when you are building a new house. Exciting advancements in technology and building techniques can make your dream home efficient and comfortable. The investment you make now in energy-efficient insulation, home and water heating, air conditioning and lighting will return to you in the form of lower energy costs and/or a higher resale value. With the support of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, you can receive financial incentives and rebates to help offset the cost of investing in energy-efficient equipment and materials. Instead of searching for each opportunity, our program administrator will be your guide to ensure that you receive all your eligible program benefits.

How Does the Program Work?

• While you are still in the planning stage, contact our program administrator, Justin Lindenmayer at 860-832-4915, lindejm@nu.com. Your builder or Home Energy Rater System (HERS) rater can make the call for you if you prefer.
• We will talk to you about your plans and help you or your builder complete the program application  (PDF: 283KB). The application can be completed either by typing in responses or by hand. In either case it must still be signed by hand. Because new construction incentives require an insulation and thermal bypass inspection, applications MUST be submitted before the home is insulated in order to be eligible.
• The application will show a comprehensive listing of all your eligible incentives. Be sure to read all of the instructions, rules, and terms and conditions very carefully to avoid delays in processing.
• Once your home is completed and the energy-efficiency measures have been verified, we send you a check. It's as simple as that.

You may have heard your neighbors or your builder talk about ENERGY STAR® homes. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Products such as lightbulbs and appliances can earn the ENERGY STAR rating if they meet certain energy-efficiency standards. New homes can also earn an ENERGY STAR rating. The new home construction program is a separate program from ENERGY STAR. However, many of our measures may qualify toward ENERGY STAR ratings. For more information, visit the ENERGY STAR Web site.

In order to receive ENERGY STAR certification and the associated rebate on your new home, it must be inspected by a certified Home Energy Rater System (HERS) rater. Please contact participating Connecticut HERS raters  (PDF: 56KB) directly to discuss your options and to set up an inspection appointment. Please note that in order to qualify for ENERGY STAR certification, inspections must be conducted both prior to dry wall installation and again once construction is complete.
