Natural Gas Expansion FAQ

  • The Governor’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy (“CES”) is Connecticut’s 10-year plan to address the energy opportunities, and challenges, within the state. The CES recommendations are geared toward expanding energy choices, lowering utility bills for Connecticut residents and businesses, improving the environment, creating clean energy jobs, and making the quality of life better in the state.

In 2013, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) approved a regulatory model for expanding natural gas use within the state. This approval makes it easier for Connecticut residents and businesses that are located near natural gas mains to switch to natural gas.

  • Natural gas expansion is a 10-year initiative that will occur in many locations throughout Connecticut. In the meantime, Yankee Gas converts customers to natural gas every day. As part of this expansion plan, Yankee’s immediate focus will be on customers who are already located on or near a natural gas main.

To see if natural gas is available on your street, fill out the Natural Gas Availability form on-line at www.yankeegas.com/availability. After you submit the form, Yankee Gas will check the availability of gas at your location and provide you with more information.

  • CES includes something for everyone, whether you’re a potential Yankee Gas customer located near a natural gas main, in a neighborhood where Yankee Gas is replacing mains, or located a distance from existing Yankee Gas mains.

Energy efficiency is an important part of the CES program. Connecticut residents are always eligible to take advantage of energy-efficiency programs, including special financing and rebate options from Energize Connecticut. There are many smart energy solutions to consider, even when natural gas is not an option.

  • There are many benefits of converting to natural gas, so we share the public’s sense of urgency and enthusiasm for quickly expanding gas mains within Connecticut. Still, the process of costing, designing and constructing new natural gas projects is complex. It requires coordination and outreach with communities and potential new customers. That’s why completing gas expansion in Connecticut is expected to take place over a 10-year period.

  • It may not. CES identifies specific economic criteria that must be met for any expansion project. For customers whose circumstances make converting to natural gas unaffordable, CES offers alternative fuel options, renewable energy options and energy-efficiency programs. There are many energy- efficiency resources available to make your home more comfortable while reducing your energy costs, such as:

    • - In-home weatherization
    • - Rebates for energy-efficient equipment upgrades, including heating, cooling, water heating and appliances
    • - Convenient payment plans and financing options.

Yankee Gas has a strong partnership with Energize Connecticut. We encourage you to call 1-877-WISE-USE (1-877-947-3873) or visit the website EnergizeCT.com to discover smart energy solutions for your home or business.

  • The typical customer converting to natural gas can save up to 50% on fuel costs. Yankee Gas has also developed new cost-saving tools to help in your conversion to natural gas. Our calculators compare natural gas with other fuel choices.

  • To take advantage of the energy cost savings, conversion requires a significant investment on the part of each new customer. The total cost is a combination of three elements:

    1. The expense of bringing an existing gas main to your street
      • - The closer the property is to an existing main, the lower this cost.
    2. The cost to install a gas service line from the street directly to your property
      • - Things like terrain, distance and existing landscaping will affect this cost.
    3. The purchase/conversion of heating equipment or appliances that run on natural gas
      • - Equipment conversion can range from a conversion burner at a few thousand dollars, to a new heating furnace or boiler at a substantially higher cost

      • - Visit EnergizeCT.com for information on rebates and financing for energy-efficient heating systems and some appliances.

In all cases, new customers are responsible for all conversion costs. Talk to a Yankee Gas Energy Advisor about your specific situation and options by clicking How to Switch or calling Yankee Gas at 855-OIL2GAS (1-855-645-2427).

  • There are several rebates and federal energy-efficiency tax credits available for homeowners to assist with the conversion costs to natural gas heating. There are also gas conversion incentives to help manage costs, and several financing programs available. Yankee Gas has developed a chart, 10 Ways to Finance Your Natural Gas Heating Equipment, to help you determine your options.

  • If your house is directly in front of a gas main, converting can be easy. In most cases, customers that will use natural gas for space heating and are located less than 150 feet from the main can connect at no cost, beyond the purchase and installation costs of new natural gas heating equipment.
