Yankee Gas Services Company (Yankee Gas) is part of the Northeast Utilities System (NYSE: NU) and Connecticut's largest natural gas distribution company, delivering natural gas to approximately 200,000 customers in 71 cities and towns (PDF:132KB).
Yankee Gas is expanding Connecticut's energy options by extending the availability of clean, efficient, reliable natural gas throughout the state. Since launching a multi-year strategic growth plan in 2001, Yankee Gas has installed miles of new mains and hundreds of new natural gas services, connecting more Connecticut homes and businesses with America's #1 fuel choice. Yankee Gas put its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Waterbury, Conn., into service in 2007. The $108 million storage facility holds the vapor equivalent of 1.2 billion cubic feet (bcf) of LNG—enough natural gas to heat 85,000 homes for a month. The facility gives Yankee Gas greater flexibility to manage its natural gas supply portfolio. In periods of low demand and lower cost, the company can purchase natural gas, store it in liquid form, and use it during the coldest days of winter when prices are normally much higher, or when demand may exceed the ability of pipelines to transport natural gas to Connecticut.
